As in America, every sport is statistic and thats how they think too. In Europe and other parts of the world, sports is about beauty, the idiomatic way of making runs and all that flair that justifies the 25 Pounds you fish to watch a cricket match.
Of course, every now and then a Michael Jordan is born and is admired across the globe and draws people to the sport who do not have interest in basketball. But then, they argue with Shaq's of this world who is effective, yes, but worth for the money, no. Good to watch on TV while playing poker. Does not excite you by his athleticism or skill.
So there was this guy, VInce Lombardi, he once said -
